Description:

  • A local friend guided us here, and though most of Marseille's cheap eating places aren't recommendable, this one is worthwhile if you're watching your euros. Small and unpretentious, with a raffish kind of amiability on the part of the owner, it's a pizzeria-restaurant, with a menu more comprehensive than usual. Pizzas (the best are pistou, fresh seafood, or cèpes), well-prepared ravioli, tagliatelle, and grilled shrimp, squid, and daurade Provençal style are available. For something really ethnic, ask for Francis's version of pieds et paquets, a country recipe savored by locals -- equal portions of grilled sheep's foot and sheep's intestines stuffed with garlic-flavored bread crumbs, herbs, and chopped vegetables. Note that this place lies on the route between Marseille and Aix.
