Description:

  • This is one of the legendary restaurants of Marseille, with a clientele of famous actors that included John Wayne and Yves Montand in the 1950s and 1960s, and a bevy of newer, mostly French stars during the late 1990s. Its founder, a formidable but funny chef named Fonfon, died in 1998, and since then, the place has been capably handled by his great-nephew, Alexandre Pinna. Expect a location directly fronting the Port du Vallon des Auffes, a harbor for fishing boats that's within a 20-minute walk east of the more famous Vieux Port. The decor is inspired by the furnishings and colors (ochers and russets) of the midsummer Provençal landscape, and the cuisine has an earthy, savory quality that many Marseillais remember from their childhoods. Examples include filet of bull braised in red wine; a savory bouillabaisse; all kinds of fish, sometimes grilled, sometimes baked in a salt crust and served on a slab of hot stone; and different variations of Provençal lamb. Appropriate starters include fish soup, a medley of stuffed vegetables (les petits farcis), and fresh baby octopus, either grilled or fried.

  • I would challenge anyone who has ever eaten a good Bouillabaisse to convince me that they create a good one here. It is simply not the case. They have managed to create a good marketing...
