The Iao Theater will be celebrating its 81st birthday next August. Construction began in 1928 and the building opened in 1929. A number of celebrities have performed here over the years including: Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Mickey Rooney and Donald O'Conner, to name a few. Currently Maui OnStage at the Historic Iao Theater is run by Executive Director Alexis Dascoulias. We currently produce 5 productions each year.

Maui OnStage has the distinction of being one of the longest consistently running theater companies in the United States. What began in 1930 with a handful of volunteers with deep visionary roots has flourished into an important cornerstone of the cultural landscape of the island. With a mission to provide quality performing arts experiences and stewardship of the Historic Iao Theater, Maui OnStage is the community's affordable and accessible place for self expression, exploration and enjoyment of the arts. There is renewed interest from a diversity of groups and individuals in participating with MOS at the Iao Theater, and the MOS proposal for a complete, historically faithful rehabilitation is gaining attention from the County and State government.

This well-loved landmark in the center of Wailuku Town is much improved after a 1995 facelift. In its 70-year history, the theater has won the hearts and support of island residents, many of whom participate in the low-budget productions. This is the home of the Maui Community Theater, a popular amateur theater company that puts on three-four plays and musicals each year. Under the directorship of local actor Doug McBride, the company has presented such favorites as Odd Couple and Blite Spirit, as well as locally written productions.
