Makawao
Located on the slopes of Haleakala, the Makawao area is perhaps one of the more unexpected areas of the island. Encompassing Haliimaile, Haiku, Makawao, Kula and Ulupalakua, these towns all hold a commonality of high elevation and cool weather. Also called upcountry, the area consists of a few bed and breakfasts, cattle ranches, luxury homes and more. But the largest attraction in the area is the "House of the Sun" or Haleakala.
