As Deb has already mentioned, there are beautiful falls in Waipio. However the hike down into the canyon is formidable. you can either rent a 4WD vehicle or pay for a shuttle in and out. Easier to reach, both in terms of hiking and driving are Rainbow Falls & the Boiling Pots in Hilo, and Akaka Falls in Honomu, about 20 minutes outside Hilo. Inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park the Devastation Trail is unique and interesting. If you are up for a longer hike, Kilauea Iki trail is 2 1/2 to 3 hours and spectacular. If it helps, a walking stick is useful and helps conserve energy on longer hikes. You can buy one in Volcano Village and maybe in the park.

Waipio Valley, along the Hamakua Coast, offers a lot of easy walking as well as hiking on to the next valley, Waimanu, actually, many valleys but the hiking gets extreme . Many waterfalls as you head towards the back of the valley, and a beautiful, small river
leading down toward the beach. Nice beach, but stong undertows certain times of the year.
