- At the center of the CBD's French district, located opposite the grandiose Parliament House and serene Treasury Gardens, the Windsor is Melbourne's most regal hotel. Built in 1883, guests have including Hollywood stars, political leaders and elite sportspeople, yet Australians know it as the setting for drafting the country's Constitution in 1898. The hotel has 180 rooms including 20 suites set over four floors and each is spacious with all modern amenities. The attached Cricketers bar, which is full of a century of Australian cricketing memorabilia, is a good place for a beer, but for something a little more fitting, is their famous afternoon tea which comes on three-tiered silver stands full of freshly baked scones with jam and cream, exquisite pastries and finger sandwiches.
