User Review:
- Lygon Street is the Italian district of Melbourne, and as such is a food lover's heaven. Its architecture and cuisine reflect the long history of Italian immigration to Melbourne, and more specifically, into the inner-city district of Carlton. It's proximity to the University of Melbourne, Melbourne's oldest and most famed unviersity, has also made it a popular hangout for students, giving it a vibrant atmosphere. Lygon Street is well-renowned for having the biggest selection of Italian restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries and gelaterias anywhere in Australia. It was also the first Victorian district to actively promote outdoor dining, with tables and chairs on footpaths being an integral characteristic of the area. Lygon Street is the perfect place to enjoy Melbourne's beautiful summer weather with friends or family. In summer, the Piazza Italia serves as a venue for many concerts and festivals.
To get there from the Melbourne CBD, simply catch any tram running along Swanston Street and get off at the University of Melbourne.
