  • NileGuide Expert Says:

A network of tracks through bush and farmland passes historic gold rush relics, mineral springs and bustling gold rush-era towns. The Dry Diggings Track links Castlemaine with Daylesford and is part of the rigorous, 240-kilometre Great Dividing Trail.

  • Description:

    • Castlemaine dates from Victoria's thriving gold rush days. The town's sandstone buildings are steeped in history and include the Powder Museum, monument to explorers Burke and Wills, the Old Castlemaine Gaol and many fine galleries. The magnificent architecture of the Castlemaine Market (now a gold rush museum) is a showpiece of the town's once-prosperous status. Stroll around Lake Joanna to Barkers Creek, the site of the first gold find in Victoria. Or try some traditional Castlemaine Rock candy. First made in 1853 and popular with the gold diggers, its recipe is still a closely-guarded family secret.
