Flemington Racecourse

Description:

  • Flemington Racecourse is one of the world's great horse racing tracks. Dating back to 1841, it holds a special place for most Melburnians, mostly because it plays host to the Melbourne Cup each November which is one of the top 3 races in the world. Races happen at other times of the year as well, providing an opportunity for most visitors to bring a basket of food, a few wines and set out on the grassy lawn. It is almost tradition for the men to wear suits and the women to wear floral dresses with extravagant hats. Of special significance is the bronze stature of Australia's most famous house, Phar Lap, who dominated racing and provided inspiration in the great depression era.
