Gunnamatta Surf Beach

Description:

  • Set on the picturesque back beaches of the Mornington Peninsula, Gunnamatta is one of the closest surf beaches to Melbourne, around about 90 minutes' drive. Be warned though, this is not for the novice as rips, tides and crashing waves make it a dangerous prospect for those with suspect swimming skills. In the summer months, crowds tend to flock here, and a kiosk is open, though ironically winter has the best waves. Locals suggest that the groundswells are more common than wind swells, and southwest is the best swell direction. Just for good measure, sharks are sometimes spotted here as well.
