- Port Fairy is a picturesque small coastal town in the south west of Victoria which can provide a fabulous luxury weekend escape or a terrific family summer holiday. It is on Victoria's Shipwreck Coast at the end of the Great Ocean Road. Built where the Moyne River meets the ocean, and settled in the 1830s, Port Fairy has almost 60 buildings registered with the National Trust and these historic stone cottages and town buildings give the town a very special ambiance. Many of them have been turned into luxury accommodation or first class restaurants so you can be assured of a special place to lay your head and some brilliant dining. Along with two excellent beaches, there is good fishing in the river, a golf course that runs along the ocean with spectacular views and a heated swimming pool. A theatre has a summer movie programme. Two spacious caravan parks provide budget accommodation and excellent caravan and tent sites. As well Port Fairy is blessed with a wide variety of festivals over the year, from the weeks-long Moyneyana summer festival (http://www.moyneyana.port-fairy.com/), Winter Weekends, the Ex Libris Literary Festival, the Spring Music Festival and the world renowned Port Fairy Folk Festival (http://www.portfairyfolkfestival.com/) held at the beginning of March each year. The bird watching is very special, particularly in winter and during shearwater breeding season, with lots of black swans, gulls, oystercatchers, pelicans and other water birds. There's a great walk around Griffiths Island and out to the lighthouse, and often good surfing off south beach. The sea breeze makes for brilliant kite flying, windsurfing and kite surfing. You can take a boat ride around the bay and sometimes you can even catch a ride in the historic lifeboat. There's kayaks for hire to paddle in the river, or bikes for hire to take a ride around town. Whenever you choose to visit, and however long you choose to stay, there's something special waiting for you in Port Fairy!
