  • Since Mendoza is so closely connected to wine, you'd expect it to be brimming over with exciting restaurants. That isn't exactly the case but there are more and more fabulous restaurants to choose from and they certainly often have wine cellars to match. Our top pick just had to be one of the most talked about restaurants in Argentina, 1884 - the flagship restaurant of flamboyant chef and restaurateur Francis Mallmann. Situated in a fantastic historic winery - the Escorihuela, to the south of Mendoza's downtown - it serves up an irresistible combination of trusty Patagonian produce and Gallic savoir faire. And of course the wines do the cuisine proud. Back in the downtown area, our second pick is a well established favourite among the trendier eateries, the wonderful Azafran, whose name means saffron. The food is exciting and lovingly prepared while the service is faultless. Our number five pick reflects the fact that so many Mendocinos have Italian roots - La Marchigiana serves up food just like so many mammas used to make, with juicy pasta topping the bill.
