Museo del Vino, Maipu

Address:

Mendoza,

Description:

Mendoza's satellite town of Maipu, around 15km to the southeast of the city, calls itself the Cradle of the Vines, owing to its myriad wineries or bodegas. Every wine tour of the region will stop off at Maipu, where one of the most traditional wineries, La Rural, opens its doors for the conventional look around the cellars and bottling sheds, while guides spout facts and figures about how wine is made, how much and at what temperature. A plus at this bodega, though, is the excellent wine museum, in a sumptuous Art Nouveau villa adjoining the winery itself. Although the exhibit, providing more facts and figures about wine and grape growing in the Mendoza region, is interesting enough, the main reason is to see this beautiful early 20th century house, symbolic of the prosperity enjoyed by European immigrants who made it at a time when Argentina was one of the richest nations on earth.
