Description:

  • Pane e Vino in Merida's Historic Center is one of the Yucatan Peninsula's best Italian restaurants. Italian natives operate this authentic, moderately priced and unpretentious trattoria, which attracts local Mexican families and expatriate couples visiting Mexico. Start you meal with the salty Toscano appetizer of jamon serrano, salami, and other cold meats served with pickled vegetables or delicate Carpaccio di Salmone, smoked salmon drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and lemon. Ordering fresh, house-made pasta is simple: any of 15 varieties can be combined with 16 different sauces. The restaurant prepares excellent Pappardele Bolognese, which is finely ground beef simmered in a milky red tomato sauce. A wine list of several pages offers vintages from Mexico, United States, Chile, Italy, and other European countries by the glass, carafe, and half or full bottle. Finish you dinner with chocolaty house-made tiramisu, a strong espresso, and a walk to nearby Santiago Park or the Main Square.
