Description:

Opened in 1994, Merida's contemporary art museum, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Ateneo de Yucatan (MACAY), stands proudly next door to the cathedral on the Main Square. The museum occupies the former Peninsular Athenaeum, which began life as the 16th century archbishop's palace. Over 45 temporary annual exhibits by national and international artists fill the 15 salons and a cavernous, covered patio. Among the permanent exhibits are galleries that celebrate the life and work of Yucatan's most important native artists: Fernando Castro Pacheco, Fernando García Ponce, and Gabriel Ramírez Aznar. Castro Pacheco's massive Mexican Realist style paintings hang in the Palacio Gobierono across the Main Square and narrate Yucatan's history. MACAY displays 30 late works by Garcia Ponce who died in 1987. The influence of Van Gogh is seen in Ramirez Aznar's highly colorful, abstract works. Between MACAY and the cathedral, the Pasaje de la Revolucion is an open-air gallery for contemporary, large-scale sculpture.
