Description:

The beautifully renovated 1908 old post office building has housed the Merida City Museum since 2007. Through excellently conceived and designed exhibitions the Museo de la Ciudad tells the long and complicated history of Mérida's evolution as an important place. The museum has dedicated sections to the city's Mayan precursor, Th'o o Ichcaanzihó, which was conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century; the daily life of the citizens of the Spanish colony, the late 19th century era of fabulous henequen wealth, and Merida's development as a modern city. You will understand better all these important aspects of Mérida through a visit to Museo de la Ciudad. An elaborate, hand-carved and painted wooden Nativity Scene called "El Monifato" is a civic treasure. Six upstairs galleries present temporary exhibits of photography, video, sculpture, and design. Stroll through the Lucas Galvez Public Market and Garcia Rejon Bazaar after a visit to the City Museum.
