Description:

Facing the cathedral, Mérida's city hall – the Palacio Municipal – was built on the site of a Mayan pyramid called Bakluum-Chaam, one of five which once stood in the Historic Center. Erected in 1735, the current façade of the Palacio Municipal was added in 1928. The soaring clock tower displays the coat of arms of Mérida, granted by King Phillip III of Spain in 1618, which is highlighted by the castle and lion of Spain's ruling house of León-Castile and a banner reading, "Very Noble and Very Loyal City of Mérida." On Monday nights, Yucatecan folkloric groups perform the jarana, a lively regional folk dance in front of City Hall. Free walking tours of the Centro Histórico – complete with English and Spanish-speaking guides – depart from the city's tourism office located inside city hall. You can also rent headphones for the excellent audio tour, Along the Roads of Merida, which is self-guided.
