Description:

Hammocks in every size and color crowd the tall shelves lining the walls of Tejidos y Cordeles Nacionales, located a few blocks south of the Zócalo near the City Museum and Lucas de Galvez Market. Tejidos y Cordeles Nacionales is not one of those tourist shops where touts try to hustle you inside (or simply hustle you). Owner Jorge Razu Dajer continues the long history of fabricating quality hammocks by this company, which celebrated its 46th anniversary in 2010. A workbench in the middle of the store holds samples of the raw henequén fiber. Prices begin at around MX$120/US$12 for a basic single-size hammock and rise in price and size to the king-size version, which easily accommodates an adult couple. If you are lucky, you might see one of the weavers at his loom in the front of the store, crafting a doll-size hammock; the intricate process is fascinating.
