Mexico City is one of the world's great museum towns, the equal to New York and Paris. Thre's a museum for just about any subject that fascinates you; if you want a little help in deciding which ones to visit, here's a list of the Top Ten Museums in Mexico City.
#1 on the Top Ten list is the the Museo Nacional de Antropologia - the National Anthropology Museum. Arguably the world's finest collection of pre-Columbian artifacts resides in a building complex that's also a modern masterpiece. If you have time to visit only one exhibition space, go to the Aztec Gallery. Alongside the fabulous ceramics and stonework diplayed here are two scale models that put the richness of the Aztec world into perspective: the first of the city of Tenochtitlan and its temples and palaces; the second a world in miniature of the bustling market at Tlatelolco.
Located in the south of Mexico City in Xochimilco, #3, Museo Dolores Olmedo is a former private estate and the home of one of Mexico's most influential art collectors. Personal spaces of the reconstructed Spanish Colonial period mansion have been preserved as they were when Olmedo lived there. Her friendship with Diego Rivera is demonstrated with hundreds of the artists works, some of them portraits of Olmedo's family.
If you grew up studying the American version of the "Mexican-American War," hasten to the Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones, #8, for Mexico's side of the story.
