The "house of mermaids," a 16th-century building constructed with rocks from a pyramid, is one of the loveliest restaurants in the historic center. It sits above the famous cantina with the same name and has a wonderful rooftop terrace with a view to the back of the Cathedral and Templo Mayor. The food is as novel as the setting. Start with classic Mexican noodle soup with chicken liver, or perhaps the stuffed crepes with chicken, squash flower, and mushrooms. The best main dishes are beef medallions in a mustard seed sauce, sea bass generously stuffed with shrimp and mushrooms, and Cornish hen served with a mango mole sauce. Live music is offered on weekends.
