• Located in the historic Avenida Madero in the old city center, this is one of the best remaining examples of Baroque architecture in the capital. Once home to the Count of Valparaíso, the building was built in the late 18th century and has, at different periods, been used as a military barracks and a hotel. It only became famous, however, when then resident Agustín de Iturbide self-proclaimed himself Emperor of all Mexico in 1821 from the beautiful balcony. All that remains on the original interiors is the first patio, which looks strikingly similar to the one found in the Royal Palace of Palermo. This is where temporary exhibitions are held, focusing on Mexican visual arts from the Viceroy period onwards, as well as music recitals and concerts. Both tourists and locals always receive a warm welcome, along with the opportunity to immerse themselves in Mexico's rich and varied culture. Admission is free.
