Tlatelolco

• Originally the stronghold of the Aztec Cuauhtémoc, and sister city of Tenochtitlán, this zone is not always a part of the city included on many tourist itineraries, but it is well worth visiting, especially if you want to get a more comprehensive idea of the Mexican capital and history. The area is infamous for being the site where hundreds of people attending a political demonstration, were massacred by government troops in 1968. If that were not enough, in 1985, it was devastated by an earthquake, which left hundreds dead and injured. On a more light-hearted note, in this neighbourhood you will also find the famous Plaza de las Tres Culturas (Square of the Three Cultures), which gathers together the remains of an Aztec ceremonial site, an old colonial church and college, and more recent constructions built during the twentieth century.
