Hi
Is safe to be there at the Zocalo but you must to be aware like in the big cities or downtown of any where around the world the best time to walk is from 8am to 5pm, as you know Mexico City is named the City of Castles so you can see beatifull Castles from XVI through now

I live one hour south of Mexico City. Whenever I visit Mexico City, I always want to see what is going on at the Zocalo, it is always interesting and there are so many wonderful things to see near there. My favorite art museum is the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, which is right across the street from the Templo Mayor, which is also a must-see. I don't know which hotel you are referring to, but I think it is safe close to the Zocalo, especially during the daylight hours. I love Mexico City.

Of course it's safe to stay close to the Zocalo in downtown Mexico City.
By the way, Mexico City is usually called "La Ciudad de los Palacios" (the City of Palaces)... there are plenty of palaces (mostly in the City Center), but only one castle: the Chapultepec Castle

Hello, I live 20 minutes away from the Zocalo at the southern location. This area is characterized by Tlalpan Avenue and on Tlalpan Avenue the subway runs along it. You will find a variety of hotels here that are very close to Subway stops. I would highly recommend staying in one of these, the area is not an unsafe area. There are always police cars driving around even at night. I will say that the only thing you have to watch for is the amount of prostitutes that these corners have at night. And not all of them are girls (if you know what I mean) But as to your question, yes, the area is safe. Happy Travels

hi! I know México City downtown very well, (I live to 20 minutes from it) Im sure that is completely safe to be in the zocalo before 8 pm, and it get safer as close as you get to the Zocalo, there are a lot of security in the zone, if you go south of the Zócalo just be sure not to go more that 2 or 3 blocks, hostels in Isabel la Catolica Street are just fine, also hostels around Zocalo, never go east or north of zocalo (there is a very dangerous zone call: Tepito, less than 1 km north from Zocalo, probably the most dangerous neighborhood in Mexico city), my mains recomendations that I can give you to visit México City is: Try not to look like foreing, dont wear fancy clothes, never carry all your money, of get traveler checks, always be aware, trust no one, downtown is a safe Zone, but dont try your good luck.
