Description:

You'll notice right away that Billings, Montana is surrounded by an imposing wall of cliffs. The Rimrocks (or "Rims") are a great place for outdoor recreation right in Montana's biggest city. While the Heritage Trail System goes all throughout the town, the portion at Swords Park may be the best jogging, walking, or biking trail in town. The Swords Park Trail winds for two miles at the top of the Rimrocks, and offers the best view of the Billings, the entire Yellowstone Valley, and five mountain ranges in the distance. For those who enjoy a good view, there are plenty of park benches and picnic tables. Also, the Rims at Zimmerman Park lures many walkers, joggers, and bikers.

The Rimrocks are also a favorite spot for area rock climbers. There are good cracks and faces for freestyle climbing—although sometimes the cliffs are fragile. Toproping is the most common, and there are some bolted routes. The most popular place to climb is over the Gregory Hills Subdivision.

Also, Black Otter Scenic Trail Drive is a three-mile road at the top of the Rimrocks offering these aforementioned scenic views. At the end of the drive, you will find Billings' notorious Boot Hill Cemetery. Every rough western town had a place where the roughest outlaws met their fates, and Billings, Montana was no exception.
