"There are a few fun things to do that are iconic such as viewing the Golden Gate Bridge, visiting Alcatraz, taking in Fisherman's Wharf, perhaps riding a Cable Car, and driving down Lombard Street "the crookedest street in the world" and that would be a busy but good very basic introduction to San Francisco and could be done in one very busy day."  See More

"My recommendation is don't stay by Fisherman's Wharf."  See More

"I will answer the part between Los Angeles and San Francisco. On the way up the coast from my perspective here are the places worth stopping / possibly staying. Santa Barbara - People love it, but I haven't quite figured out why. The town is sub-par, not so charming and lots of homeless people. The beach is detached from the town. I think that people like it if they are staying in homes or ranches on the hillside. There are also vineyards but I haven't visited them. I would say unless you are spending time at a resort such as Bacara Resort & Spa or Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara doesn't need a night...perhaps just a pit stop. Solvang - Small town in wine country that is 100% Danish. It feels like a charming european town. Hand full of mediocre inns. The one nicer hotel I am aware of is HOTEL CORQUE Los Olivos - Haven't been but people love it. Small quaint town in wine country. This is smaller than Solvang and more charming, but I haven't personally been there. Pismo Beach - This is probably what Santa Monica was like 50 years ago. It is an untouched California beach town that probably feels exactly like it did 30 years ago. Its not very crowded, has a beautiful stretch of beach but is also slightly run-down with older motels. Its possible that when we visited we missed the newer side. In either case this was a fun beach for our dog to run around because there weren't many people at all. We just stopped here for dinner and some beach time but didn't sleep here. San Simeon - This is pretty empty but gorgeous stretch of coastline with a few older hotels that aren't very nice but do the job. The big attraction here is Hearst Castle but we didn't have time to visit it. They are not dog friendly. Sam Simeon was used as a pit-stop for a night, but it was purely just for a place to sleep. Cambria - One of the scariest places I've been. It is 100% a ghost town....meaning actual ghosts *live here. It felt like it was straight out of an RL Stine or Stephen King book. Bizarre place. Big Sur - This is AMAZINGLY beautiful mountainous coastline. Tons of places to pull over and take pictures and a a handful of hikes along the way. Must stop at McWay Falls for photos. A cool place to stop for food and a nice walk is Ragged Point. There is also a hotel here that seems to be a perfect place to stay given its gorgeous plot of land. It feels like a highway rest-stop/biker stop with live music and lots of biker people. Moving up the coast a great place to have lunch is Ventana Inn (."  See More

"I don't believe there is too much going on in the ocean right now (bit early for salmon), but did have some luck with striper last weekend (limited out) on a charter out of Fisherman's Wharf in the bay."  See More

"Hi Kim, - I recommend taking the ferry from Fisherman's Wharf to Tiburon."  See More

"You can pass through famous California Coastal towns like Mendocino, Jenner and Bodega (where the Alfred Hitchcock movie "the birds" was filmed) before you get to San Francisco (crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and then you can check out places like Fisherman's Wharf & San Francisco Chinatown."  See More

"Or just head down to Pier 39 on Fisherman's Wharf and go to fog harbour."  See More

"and Mrs Fields (always my favorite chocolate chip cookie) to Chocolate Heaven to Ghiradelli Square, you're gonna find your most concentrated choices in Fisherman's Wharf!"  See More

"It's also centrally located near San Francisco Chinatown, SOMA, Ferry Building, North Beach and even Fisherman's Wharf which I don't care for, but I know that nothing I can do will stop a first time visitor to SF from going there at least once."  See More

"Fisherman's Wharf - I find this a little too touristy and much prefer Ferry Building Marketplace."  See More

"I can answer specifically for LA, although I do know some parts of SF I'd recommend visiting: For LA, I'd recommend visiting the following places 1. Griffith Observatory (especially at night -- the view is amazing) 2. Hollywood Walk of fame (very tourist-y, but I'd still recommend it) 3. Disneyland Park (this is in Orange County, but still worth visiting) 4. LACMA 5. Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade (beautiful beach experience with shops etc.) 6. Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills 7. Daikokuya (excellent Ramen [Japanese noodle] shop in Little Tokyo) ."  See More

"Then walk along Fisherman's Wharf area to the Embarcadero Center (Big Clock) Marina for a R/T Ferry from there to Sausalito & return."  See More

"Take the cable car from market street to Fisherman's Wharf."  See More

"They have great seafood without the crowds of Fisherman's Wharf."  See More

"It is on the edge of the Tenderloin but we felt really safe and it was in walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf (or you can use the free cable car) and lots of awesome restaurants."  See More

"If you can spare an hour or two: Take a Cable Car form Market Street (Downtown at 5th street and Market) to Fisherman's Wharf through the steep streets of San Francisco (long lines and I think it’s now $5 per person!"  See More

"Fisherman's Wharf is pretty family-oriented."  See More

"I recommend that you start the day walking half way across the Golden Gate Bridge (about an hour), then we like to walk around Union Square and eat lunch, catch a cable car down to Fisherman's Wharf to explore and eat dinner."  See More

"Avoid Fisherman's Wharf."  See More

"You go to Fisherman's Wharf to take the boat and then you get views of Golden Gate Bridge from the boat ride and on the island."  See More

"Bike through Fisherman's Wharf and stop by Musée Mécanique for some old school games."  See More

"And you could also visit Fort Point National Historic Site at the base of the bridge, close to Fisherman's Wharf."  See More

"Fisherman's Wharf is a lot of fun, busy, bustling and crowded-but ultimately not very local anymore."  See More

"From there (or close to there) you can see the Golden Gate Bridge, walk past the end of the line for the Powell-Hyde Cable Car (seeing it is good enough for me, but you can ride it if you choose), then walk down to Fisherman's Wharf."  See More

"Walk along Fisherman's Wharf or go to Union Square."  See More

"If you're up for walking, you can cover a lot of the most popular areas on foot: the Embarcadero Center up to North Beach(the "little Italy" neighborhood) and around through Fisherman's Wharf to the Marina District."  See More

"Avoid Fisherman's Wharf at all costs."  See More

"The Main things (in no particular order): Alcatraz Fisherman's Wharf Conservatory of Flowers California Academy of Sciences De Young Museum San Francisco Museum of Modern Art San Francisco Chinatown North Beach Lands End Exploratorium Ferry Building Marketplace Golden Gate Bridge Sausalito Mission District"  See More

"Fisherman's Wharf is great if you want to be near the sea."  See More

"La Jolla Cove - Great beaches, natural arch, birds, seals, and great food Fisherman's Wharf - Go explore San Francisco Sea Lion Caves - Visit seals on their terms Astoria - Where Goonies was filmed."  See More

"Since you're coming for a short time, though, you can never go wrong staying centrally located in the downtown Union Square, and the Fisherman's Wharf is touristy and a little out there, but could be a fun place for a three year old."  See More

"Parking all along Fisherman's Wharf area sucks."  See More

"Hey Jack, on a regular day without any special events in town, parking is tough to find, so I would try not to drive to the Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf area unless you really have to."  See More

"For chowder, specifically, hit up the more touristy part of the Embarcadero from Pier 39 to Fisherman's Wharf."  See More

"Catch the ferry back from Sausalito to Fisherman's Wharf, by way of Alcatraz (you don't stop there, but you can see it from the ferry)."  See More

"Along the Embarcadero, maybe start at Cupid's Span and end up at the Fisherman's Wharf."  See More

"Rent a bike near Fisherman's Wharf."  See More

"You can then walk (or ride) down to Sausalito to grab lunch or ice cream and take the regular ferry back to Fisherman's Wharf."  See More

"Other north shore points like Ghiradelli Square, or The Cannery Shopping Center and Fisherman's Wharf would work as well."  See More

"Do NOT bother going to Fisherman's Wharf -- it is famous, but crowded and not very interesting."  See More

"Avoid the weekday rush hours; catch the ferry at Pier 41 near Fisherman's Wharf."  See More

"Alcatraz of course, not romantic per se (although you ride a ferry over), but you MUST reserve your tickets in advance because they sell out quickly Walk up Coit Tower If it's your thing there are the SF Ballet, Opera and Symphony If you have a car, I suggest driving up to the top of Twin Peaks at night Crissy Field is nice during the day You can also visit the Painted Ladies Of course, be sure to take one ride on the Cable Cars, touristy but fun I'd recommend the Opera/Symphony in the Park, but I don't think it works with your travel dates If you had more time, I'd recommend going outside of SF for a half-day trip to Half Moon Bay or Sausalito These places are OK, but more touristy than anything else and kind of time wasters if you don't have a lot of time: Lombard Street Fisherman's Wharf Any Cirque du Soleil that happens to be in town San Francisco Chinatown Not romantic at all, but the following are cool if it tickles your fancy (I'd probably skip since you only have 4 days): Exploratorium sciency exhibits California Academy of Sciences, more sciency stuff including a cool Planetarium show Good nightlife spots in SOMA and Mission District, but can be slightly dodgy in some areas, but generally safe if you're somewhat careful."  See More

"I live in Russian Hill, and from my apartment, you are central to the following: ***easy access (less than a couple blocks) to both Cable Car lines ***5 minute walk to the cafes, pizzerias and wine bars of North Beach North Beach, also known as SF's Little Italy ***10 minute walk to San Francisco Chinatown ***15 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf ***15 minute walk to the the Marina ***20 minute walk to Union Square ***20 minute walk to Ferry Building Personally I wouldn't stay in the Sunset or Potrero - neither of them are that central to most of the activities/sights you would probably be interested in."  See More

"SFers love coffee shops, so try one of the Blue Bottle Coffee locations, Philz Coffee, Sightglass Coffee, Ritual Coffee Roasters or one of the other top shops Golden Gate Park is a large park and nice as well Walk around the Presidio, a scenic, large historic area Check out Haight-Ashbury if you're looking for the 60's hippy vibe, probably the closest thing to the hippy culture left in SF For a nice coastal drive and some surfing, you can check out Pacifica or Ocean Beach Some of the other standard tourist activities aside from checking out the Golden Gate Bridge are Fisherman's Wharf and seeing sea lions, Alcatraz, riding one of the cable cars, and checking out the Ferry Building."  See More

"You can also walk along The Embarcadero to Fisherman's Wharf, which is very touristy, but fun for kids."  See More
