Description:

Few remember that at its core, Monterey is a military town. It still houses a Naval base and the Naval Postgraduate School and the Monterey Institute of International Study. The Presidio provides a starting point for all of the area's military characters. It began as a Spanish military outpost when they first came to Alta California in 1770. The presidio changed hands to the Americans in 1846 during the Mexican-American War and gained further importance during the Philippine Insurrection of 1902. Ever since, it has been a sight of historical and military significance for the area.

The Presidio of Monterey also pays tribute to the earliest settlers in the region, the Native American population that unfortunately was decimated because of war and disease.
