The "little chapel" at this California mission, founded by Spanish Franciscan Junipero Serra in the 1600s, is the first cathedral built in California. It is about 214 years old and a pride of Monterey. This mission is, not to overstress the point, the oldest mission in California, an impressive fact when considering that the missions predate even the earliest non-religious settlers themselves. The chapel has led at least five lives and now serves as a testament to California's distinctive past.
