Hi Jeff! Maybe you could take a tour... there is a bus which departs form Punta Carretas at about 4:00 PM everyday, taking the passengers to the main places a tourist must visit... this service is provided by Buquebus. If you want to have lunch, there are several good restaurants in Ciudad Vieja, Punta Carretas and Pocitos where you may find English speaking waiters (for example: La Corte, Don Peperone, Gardenia, Rara Avis)

Of course a 4 hours tour will be perfect. Ask in your hotel about the different companies that do it.
Well, I will tell you all the "must see" in Montevideo.
1) The most emblematic thing, is the "Rambla", this is the coastline. You can take bus D1 (it takes the coast from Pocitos to Carraco) is a regular bus, but comfortable.
2) Ciudad Vieja (avoid it by night) unless you are going to the pubs area, still by night be very alert. During business hours it is nice to visit, there you HAVE to visit all the MUSEUMS, they have FREE ADMISION, they are nice, and will show you the history of our country, there are many: MUseo Romantico, Casa de Lavalleja, Palacio Taranco, etc.
3) Artigas Mausoleum, some Uruguayans hate it because it was done during the dictatorship. BUT from my point of view (I am an Architect) I can tell you that it is very well done, very very simple yet impresive. It is located under "Plaza Independencia" Free admision as well.
4) Saturday before lunch GO to Ciudad Vieja, it is worth the visit, you will see people dancing Tango on the streets, music, and antiques vendors in Plaza Matriz.
There, at Plaza Matriz, you will find our Cathedral, and in front of the Cathedral, "EL cabildo" the place where the first constitution was signed. Also was the first jail in Montevideo, now is a museum, FREE admision as well.
5) FOOD:
There are nice restauants, of course, but to try beef go to "Mercado del Puerto" also located in Ciudad Vieja! Prices are right BUT double check, waiters use to think they are "SMART" double charging or doing some tricks...I hate that! but If you pay attention, ask the price before ordering, etc. You will eat very good beef and also some traditional food as well, you can ask for "Medio y Medio" witch is a blend of champagne and white wine, served chiled it is delitious, the price is very good, and it is a must!!!
- If you go to Carrasco (middle up class neighbourhood along the coast) you can find a nice restaurant, with good prices actually a very nice restautant, that are used to deal with turists, ti is Called "Garcia" it is right on Arocena Ave.
- Try "CHIVITOS" this is a speciality that we have in Uruguay. It is a beef sandwich, voted in travel chanel as the best sandwich in the world, if you want to try the best one, go to CHIVITERIA MARCOS, (Rambla & Coimbra st.) they will ask you what do you want, and you have to say: (poneme todo!) (put everything!) unless you do not like onion, or something else....
-PIZZA: The best place is Piza Subte (this is located downtown, Ejido St. & 18 de Julio) right in front of la Intendencia (Townhall). Ask for a muzzarella, or go for the stuffed pizzas, the one I love the most is "Hawaiana" nothing to do with american pizzas, be prepared!!!
-Desserts: You have to try: Massinis (From Carrera), and postre CHaja con DUrazno. Most of the restaurants have this desserts, but ask if they have the original (confiteria Carrera does the best Massini) and (postre Chaja, from Paysandu).
-Other thing is very nice to try are the sandwiches, you can try them if you go to Punta Carretas Mall, go for Oro del Rhin, ask for a capuchino with sandwiches, you can ask "mixtos" (jam and cheese) or "olimpico" letucce tomatoe, jam cheese, etc. You should try both, the bread is SOOOO SOFT that you can not imagine. I travel a lot and never find anything similar...
If you like Futbol, try to go to "stadio Centenario" specially if Uruguay plays! This stadium was built for the first WORLD CUP during 1930.
If you have any doubt, please contact me. I would love to help.
Have a great time in Montevideo!!!! (and if you have time, MUST GO TO PUNTA DEL ESTE)

Hi, Jim, it depends the age you have and what you liked. Yes, definitely you have to go to Ciudad Vieja, on a Saturday at Lunch to Mercado del Puerto, it is a big place full of typical "parrilladas", very good meat, sausages, and full of local people, dances, artcrafts,etc...and good shops...Also, the Rambla, and PUNTA DEL ESTE IS A MUST!!! one of our best beach resorts, beautiful..although now is winter...when are you coming?? there are a lot of tours, in hotels of montevideo.

ALSO, you should go for the day or two to COLONIA, a 3 hour drive from Montevideo by bus, a small city , historical one, very, very nice...with a fortress...good restaurants, too...
In Montevideo, there are a lot of good restaurants to visit near the Punta Carretas shopping, very big, and nice, and lots of places around there.

Good luck, if you come to punta del este let me know, as I am living there and can show you around.

Winter is the best time to visit Montevideo, plenty of museums, plays and films. You can also enjoy our varied cuisine, specially our barbecue called "parrilla". I recommend el Mercado del Puerto where you have many to choose from. And a tour around the Ciudad Vieja is a must, where you can see ancient buildings and crafts every day. The nightlife is busy this time of year, many clubs, pubs, specially in Pocitos, Punta Carretas and Buceo Soho (where the World Trade Center is).
If you need more advice about restaurants and clubs don't hesitate to contact me.
Have a good trip!
