NileGuide Expert Says:
Close to Nimes the Pont du Gard is one of France's most famous tourist attractions. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is sure not to dissapoint.
Description:
- This world-famous monument above the River Gard was built in 34 CE. The structure still bears witness to the engineering brilliance and imagination of the Romans. The bridge is part of an aqueduct built to carry water the 50 kilometers (31 miles) from a source near Uzès across gorges and hills to the city of Nîmes. One of the most visited sites in France, the bridge and the surrounding area has undergone major renovations. A visitors center and several shops, restaurants and picnic sites are now established on site. The monument remains closed on Mondays and is open from Tuesdays to Sundays at 9:30a or 10a to 5:30p or 7p depending upon the season.
