The Tiny Pensione Del Popolo is not for everybody. But for young cultural creatives looking for a place to stay in town and experience the "Montreal scene," this might be the best place you can rent a room, period. Just as long as you do it well in advance. The Pensione Del Poplo is the fifth branch of the ever-growing Casa Del Popolo Mile End 'empire' and offers the traveler charm and warmth with no pretense, and a chance to stay in the epicenter of a cultural scene. The Casa, the famous restaurant/show bar opened by one of the founding members of Godspeed! You Black Emperor, eventually spilled over into a larger venue across the street, an old dance hall renamed La Sala Rosa, and once the restaurant under the dance-hall became available it became the poplo's La Sala Rossa Spanish restaurant serving tapas and flamenco dancing. The Pension sits amidst the hustle and bustle of food and bands, but quiet and clean, some rooms even overlooking their garden. Not all rooms have private washrooms, some are shared, but this is not a 4 star boutique hotel, it's a pensione, and the prices are pensione prices ($40-75 a night double-occupancy) but more importantly, the fringe benefits are overwhelming—there is fantastic food both at the Casa and Sala Rossa, and even better, you get free admission to all Casa Del Popolo events while you are a guest.
