Local Expert Sonja Holverson advises: all these trips are extraordinary. I would start out with a cogwheel train trip straight up to Rochers de Naye for a fabulous view of the Lake Geneva region and beyond!

Local Expert Sonja Holverson suggests: The Golden Pass trains leave Monteux on a track slightly away from the Inter City trains. Just look for the signs. Always arrange for your tickets in advance at Swiss Rail.
historic, modern cogwheel trains and panoramic trains climb upwards like no other trains and oftentimes straight up. Originally (and still referred to by the locals), the company was called the MOB. There are trains available from Montreux to the top of Rochers de Naye, to the historic birthplace of Switzerland, Lucerne in a panoramic train, and to the Les Pleiades Funicular and bus from Vevey towards exciting elevations at which you think you are in the sky! Coming in 2015 thanks to new technology, there will be a train than can run straight through from Montreux to Interlaken (now you have to change in Zweissimma). These special trains can be expensive and you should check with Swiss Rail for a pass for travel all of Switzerland if you plan to take other trips (for various periods of time). As some of the smaller trains are privately owned there may be a supplement. Check with Swiss Rail. A Eurail pass is also valid in Switzerland but again, you may have to pay a supplement for the private lines.
