Description:
Located on the site of the final residence of southern Ute Chief Ouray and his wife, Chipeta, the Ute Indian Museum offers one of Colorado's most complete exhibitions of Ute traditional and ceremonial artifacts, including clothing, baskets, and household items. Several dioramas depict mid-19th-century lifestyles, and historic photos are displayed. Also on the grounds are Chipeta's grave, bubbling Ouray Springs, a native-plant garden, and an outdoor display on Spanish explorers who passed this way in 1776. The museum sponsors various festivals and programs throughout the year (call for details). It also has a store that specializes in Ute pottery and other handcrafted American Indian arts and crafts, and houses the Montrose Visitor Center. Allow about 1 1/2 hours.
