Church of the Archangel Gabriel (Tserkov' Arkhangela Gavriila)

Description:

  • In 1701-1707, a favorite of Peter I, Prince Men'shikov, obtained an Icon of the Polotskaia Mother of God, believed to have been painted by St. Luke himself. On returning to Moscow, Men'shikov ordered architect Zarudnyi to build a new church for it. It had the shape of a high tower, and the cupola was crowned with the gilded sculpture of an angel with a cross. On 13 June 1723, a storm blew up and lightning set fire to the cupola. The upper part of the tower was completely devastated, and the 50 bells collapsed to the ground. After the fire, the Polotskaia icon was taken to Men'shikov's private chapel in St Petersburg.
