Church of the Ascension (Tserkov' Vozneseniia)

Description:

  • This stunningly harmonious creation of an unknown Renaissance architect is remarkable in four major respects. Its erection in 1530 celebrated the birth of a prince who was to become Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It is where the Imperial Icon of Our Lady (one of Russia's most revered icons) was discovered in 1917. It is Moscow's third tallest church building at 62 meters. This building represents an explosive departure from the cubic style of church architecture to constructing churches in the form of towers with roofs.
