Description:
- Independence Day, or the Day of Sovereignty of the Russian Federation as it is sometimes known, is a public holiday honoring the memory of the first ever nationwide democratic elections. The holiday was first observed in the summer of 1992, one year after Boris Yeltsin had been elected the first President of the Russian Federation. Although Russia gained formal independence on June 12, 1990, it wasn't until Michael Gorbachev resigned on December 25, 1991 that the USSR ceased to exist and the country divided into 15 different nations on December 26, 1991. Today, the Russians seem keen to continue celebrating their hard won democracy.
