Ivan Kupalo

Description:

  • In Russia, St John the Baptist's day is celebrated as Ivan Kupalo. The Russians had always celebrated the pagan holiday of Ivan Kupalo and after trying unsuccessfully to replace the festival with St John the Baptists day, the church combined the two. The holiday is for young unmarried people, and many of the rituals are rather romantic – for example, bonfires are built and young couples jump over the fires holding hands. If they manage to keep hold of each other, it's considered a sign that they will be married soon. There's also music, traditional songs, dancing and making merry.
