Description:
- When Moscow held its first Irish celebration in 1992, the event was big enough to attract the patronage of Mayor Luzhkov. Organized under the auspices of Moscow's St Patrick's Society, the celebrations are usually held in the middle of March over a whole weekend. First of all there is a Fancy Dress Parade on Staryi Arbat Street, then the festivities are continued with free performances by Irish and Russian bands. The culmination is the Carnival Parade on Novyi Arbat Street, where there is also a show of Irish sheepdogs and a harp concert. Needless to say, the event is also accompanied by some Irish-sized drinking, and Guinness wherever possible.
