Another restaurant frequented by the who's who of Mumbai, Trishna is considered one of the best in the world. Butter pepper garlic king crab is Trishna's signature dish, but you'll also find jumbo pomfrets and tiger prawns (done in any style) cooked to perfection. Despite its reputation as a somewhat snobbish restaurant, Trishna isn't about ambience (the decor in fact is somewhat tacky) -- everyone is here for the food. Recommended dishes include pomfret Hyderabadi -- barbecued with black pepper, it's a true masterpiece; pomfret hariyali enveloped in green masala and baked in a tandoor; fish sholay kebab; Kolhapuri prawns (spicy, so order a drink); or squid expertly prepared with butter, pepper, and garlic. Staff tends to be rather snooty, and if you ask for menu suggestions you're sure to be recommended the most expensive items on the menu. Before the unveiling, it was rechristened Flora after the Roman Goddess of Abundance. The statue sits next to another monument that honors the soldiers who died protecting the state, leading to the square being renamed Hutatma Chowk. Incidentally, this is the same spot where the gate to the St. Thomas Cathedral stood, hence lending the name Churchgate to the area.

    Description:

This is a place for those who are really trying to keep their budget in control. Located in one of the busiest areas of Bombay, staying in New Bengal will be an adventure you've never had before. The amenities are bare-minimum, and the service is tolerable. Decor...what decor? The two restaurants, Howrah and Zaffran are quite popular with the locals. The former, which serves traditional Bengal cuisine is one of its kind in Mumbai.

Day Note:

Today switch hotels to Sahil, a hotel a bit more to the North West located near the train station. From here you can better explore this part of the city. Girgaum Chowpatty is one of the more popular Mumbai Beaches and offers a wide variety of food stalls for a perfect lunch or snack. Again, this is another great spot for free people watching entertainment. After a day at the beach, head to the Gandhi Museum to learn more about this famous pacifist and see...read more

A city built on islands, Mumbai has no shortage of beaches. The most popular among them is Girgaum Chowpatty, a stretch of beach that extends along Marine Drive near Charni Road Railway Station. The only sand beach area in South Mumbai offers a unique culinary experience for both the tourists as well as the locals. A stretch of the Chowpatty beach is populated by a long line of fast food stalls serving excellent Pav Bhaji (spicy mashed potatoes and bread), Vada Pav (potato cutlets in bread) and kulfi (regional ice-cream). Girgaum Chowpatty however truly comes to life at sunset, with its masseurs, transvestites, balloon-sellers, gamblers, fortune-tellers, magicians, ferris wheels and shooting galleries.

    Description:

Residence of the iconic Mahatma Gandhi between 1917 and 1934, Mani Bhavan is tucked in one of the leafy bylanes around August Kranti Maidan. The house was converted to a museum in 1955 and is now a vast repository of Gandhian literature and philosophy. Tourist leaflets are available in all major European and Asian languages and photography is not permitted. The two storied Mani Bhavan has on display dioramas of the major events in Gandhi's life, a photo essay (stunning is the Second Round Table Conference image, where all eyes are turned to the camera, Gandhi is completely oblivious to it) and copies of letters written by the Mahatma (the note to Hitler is fascinating), exemplifying Gandhi's simplicity and humility. Nothing makes these traits more evident than his well preserved room, equipped with just the bare necessities and the symbolic spinning wheel (Charkha).

The alternative hangout for Mumbai's 'beer and rock lovers', the Ghetto Pub as a name is a bit of a misnomer. Off the beaten path in a lane behind the Mahalaxmi Temple, this underground bar and pub is where theater buffs and college kids shoot pool and graffiti profound thoughts on the walls. Beer is served by the pitcher and might be a tad insipid for most tastes. Don't count on carrying out an intense conversation either. There are no private corners to get away from the loud, over-bearing music.

Day Note:

Consult the web or locals to see when the low tide will occur and schedule your day around it. At low tide, you can walk out to the Haji Ali Dargah in the bay. Walk around it and marvel at its location and the mystery surrounding its construction. Head back to the main land and visit another gallery, Cymroza Gallery. Cymbroza is known for its exhibitions and is a must see for any art enthusiast. Stop at Swati Snacks for some delicious food before heading out.

Believed by some to be the tomb of a wealthy saint and built by his devout followers, the second version states that the revered saint died on pilgrimage and his body floated to the spot. Whether a follower of Pir Haji Ali Shah or not, the mosque is a must for all visitors. Except for the sanctum sanctorum, visitors are free to stroll around the premises. Haji Ali Dargah is accessible via an inconspicuous causeway next to Haji Ali Juice Centre, a walk best attempted during low-tide.

This ten-day festival is celebrated from the 4th day after the new moon day in the Hindu month of Bhadrapad (August-September). The festival is observed with great fanfare in the country, but especially in Mumbai. Ganesh is the god of wisdom and power. His name is uttered before the commencement of any important activity. In this festival, a large number of idols of Ganesh, in clay and in all possible sizes, are made and bought by people. The idol is kept in the house for a few days and is then taken out ceremoniously and immersed in the ocean.
