Probably the most famous painting in the gallery is the self portrait of Albrecht Dürer, which is a fairly small painting so it is in a smaller side room, don't miss it!

  • Description:

    • Built by King Ludwig I in 1826, the Alte Pinakothek is among the greatest achievements of the Bavarian kings.  The origin of the collection dates back to Duke Wilhelm V in the 16th century with works being added by nearly every Duke, Elector, and King from that time onward.  This is one of the best museums for what are referred to as the old German masters and does an excellent job at showcasing many of the best works of not only German masters, but European art history from the 14th to the 18th centuries.

The collection continues at the Neue Pinakothek across the street which begins at the 19th century.
