The castle has a beautiful yard. On days with nice weather it is a rather romantic location. Art exhibits are occasionally displayed as well.
Description:
Formerly used for hunting and pleasure by Bavarian princes, Blutenburg Castle was built in 1425 by Albrecht III, who stayed there with his lover Agnes Bernauer. She is one of the popular, tragic figures of Bavarian history, having been taken prisoner by Albrecht's father in 1435 and drowned as witch. Blutenburg is a moated castle situated between two branches of the River Würm, one of which was dammed to form two lakes. It is an example of late gothic architecture which, by the time the prince's stables were constructed in 1529, had been significantly extended (the castle church was added in 1488 and the New Hall in 1456). There are lovely gardens designed by Teutsch. The castle has housed the International Youth Library since 1983, which, with over 500,000 volumes, is the largest of its type in the world. There is a lending library of books in 15 languages, available free of charge to young people under 18. The Michael Ende Museum has also been located in the building since 1996.

The park also houses the large Olympic indoor swimming pool complete with diving boards as well as the Olympic hall and the Olympic stadium used as a venue for concerts, theatrical displays, conventions and sports events. The ice rink doubles as a basketball court housing both the Munich Ice Hockey Team as well as the local Basketball team. The Olympic hill was built up with rubble left in the city after the bombings of WWII. The park is also home to Munich's SeaLife aquarium.

This is all done with amazingly well done multimedia and hands on techniques which make this museum fun for all ages and keeps the interest of even the not so museum loving crowd. Concerts are frequently held in the main lawn during summer evenings. Check the website to see if an event is planned.
Description:
With a longer facade than the Palace of Versailles, Schloß Nymphenberg was the impressive summer residence of the Wittelsbachs. Because the palace was built in several phases from 1664 onwards, various architects are credited with its construction, among them Barelli, Zucalli and Viscardi. The Stone Hall is particularly impressive and the famous 'Schönheitengalerie' (Gallery of the Beauties) is also a must, containing the portraits of 36 local women. The palace grounds are particularly pleasant in the warmer months, fusing French and English landscaping techniques to great effect. A few interesting smaller palaces can be found in the park: the Amalienburg, Pagodenburg and Badenburg. Built in 1721, this was modern Europe's first swimming pool. The Marstallmuseum boasts a comprehensive display of carriages, sleds and crockery; the Meditationskapelle (Meditation Chapel) with its Magdalenenklause is also worth a visit.

Description:
Alter Peter (Old Peter) is the tower of the oldest parish church in Munich, St Peter's Church. The valiant visitor who manages to climb the 302 steps to the top will have an incomparable view of Munich and, on a clear day, the Alps look close enough to touch. St. Peter's was named after the old hill on which it stands, the Petersbergl. There was apparently a chapel on the site before Munich was founded, which was then replaced with a Romanesque structure in the 11th century and later a Gothic building. In the 14th century, the double-tower was redeveloped to form the single tower facade of the church which remains today. Over the centuries, St. Peter's underwent even more changes, mainly in the Baroque and Rococo periods.

Description:
When one of the Bavarian royals said that he was going to the castle, he could have meant any number of places, especially if he was Ludwig II. But if he said that he was going home, he could only be referring to the Residenz. This enormous palace, with a history almost as long as that of the Wittelsbach family, was the official residence of the rulers of Bavaria from 1385 to 1918. Added to and rebuilt over the centuries, the complex is a conglomerate of various styles. Depending on how you approach the Residenz, you might first see a German Renaissance hall (the western facade), a Palladian palace (on the north), or a Florentine Renaissance palace (on the south facing Max-Joseph-Platz).
The Residenz was restored after its almost total destruction in World War II and now houses the Residenz Museum, a concert hall, the Cuvilliés Theater, and the Residenz Treasury. The Residenz Museum (tel. 089/29-06-71), the southwestern section of the palace, has some 120 rooms of art and furnishings collected by centuries of Wittelsbachs. To see the entire collection, you'll have to take two tours, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. You may also visit the rooms on your own.

The first and last of Munich's city gates for Munich's second set of city walls, the Isartor, was built in 1337. Kaiser Ludwig IV the Bavarian had second city wall built to protect the expanding city and the wall remained until the late 1700's. All of the other city gates were eventually torn down or dramatically modified, but the Isartor remains quite close to its original look. It was restored between 1833 and 1835 by Friedrich von Gärtner. The murals were painted in 1835 and depict the victorious return of Ludwig IV the Bavarian to Munich after the battle of Ampfing in 1322. The Isartor is today used as part of the Valentin Museum as well as a cafe.

Description:
When the foundations of the city walls were laid in 1791, Prince Karl Theodor ordered the construction of a square in front of the Neuhauser Tor, now the Karlstor. The square was named Karlsplatz after the prince, although the locals call it Stachus, probably after the Wirtschaft zum Stachus, or Stachus Inn, opened by Eustachius Föderl in 1755. The circular structures were built in 1899-1902 by Gabriel von Seidl in place of an earlier building erected in 1803. Karlsplatz was one of the busiest squares in the world in the 1920's. It was pedestrianised in 1972 to form the western edge of the pedestrian zone and, despite an unfortunate fountain and the traffic on Altstadtring which cuts the square off from the western side of the city, it is a popular meeting-place and one of the last sunny spots in the evening.

Munich's showcase boulevard was planned by Leo von Klenze on the orders of Ludwig I, after whom the street was named. Construction began in 1817 and continued until the mid-19th Century under the oversight of master architect Friedrich von Gärtner. The boulevard appears to have been inspired by the Via del Corso in Rome which had made a great impression on Ludwig and Klenze during their travels in Italy. Ludwigstraße begins at the Renaissance-style Feldherrnhalle and continues northwards to the Romanesque Siegestor. Ludwig Maximilian University and St Ludwig's Church are two other highlights; they too display a heavy Italian influence.

This is a hot spot in the city center. If you are interested in taking a tour or having your picture taken with traditionally dressed Germans, this is a spot to check out.
Description:
Set against a clear blue sky, the towers of the Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady) form Munich's most celebrated landmark. The distinctive towers - built in 1525 - make the church of considerable architectural interest as they are considered to be the precursors of the Renaissance style. The church itself was designed by Gothic architect Jörg von Halsbach in 1468. Its size is imposing, but its simplicity and symmetry rule out any suggestion of ostentation. The interior is mainly Gothic, but the altars were redesigned in the 18th Century under Baroque influence.

Description:
In the early 14th century, the city underwent great structural improvements as part of the expansion programme ordered by Duke Ludwig VI of Bavaria. Sendlinger Tor was first documented in 1318 as the 'gateway to Italy' and, along with Neuhausertor and Isartor, formed part of secondary fortifications built in the 14th century. The main tower was demolished in 1810, yet both side towers were restored by Zenetti in 1860. In 1906, the three routes through the gate were substituted with a single one by Bertsch. The oldest cinema in the city, Filmtheater Sendlinger Tor, is located opposite St.Matthäus Kirche (1953-55) on the other side of the square.

It was flanked on all sides by the houses of some of wealthiest families in Munich. After the area was badly damaged in the Second World War, the Löwenturm was uncovered in the clear up that followed. Often wrongly taken for part of the original city walls, it was actually a water tower for a garden that now no longer exists. Here you can by the freshest fruit and vegetables in the whole city. The market has a reputation of having higher prices than your average supermarket but in actual fact many goods here are cheaper than elsewhere. Vikualienmarkt also has a beer garden that is more calm than those at Marienplatz.
Description:
Unless you happen to be staying in a place where you have access to a kitchen, it's doubtful that you'll want to be hauling groceries back to your hotel room during your stay in Munich. That doesn't detract, however, from the allure of wandering through the open-air stalls of the city's most prominent food market, a few minutes' walk south of the Marienplatz (there is no specific address, but the market sprawls over a wide area and can't be missed). It's composed of hundreds of independently operated merchants who maintain whatever hours they want, often closing up their cramped premises whenever the day's inventory is sold out. Most economy-minded shoppers, however, show up, shopping basket in hand, around 8am, to stock their larders before noon. By 5pm, only the hardiest of merchants remain in place, and by early evening, the kiosks are locked up tight. On the premises is a worthy collection of wine, meats, cheeses, and all the other bounty of the Bavarian agrarian world.

Although it is primarily a monument to the Bavarian army and its success in the Napoleonic war of liberation, it should be considered from a different perspective these days. The gate was badly damaged in the Second World War and restored with the following inscription by Wilhelm Hausenstein: "Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war and a reminder to us all". The proportions of the arch resemble the Constantine Gate in Rome, on which it was modelled. The top of the arch is decorated with bronze figures depicting Bavaria on a chariot being led by four lions. The Siegestor marks the northern end of Ludwigstraße and the start of Schwabing, one of the city's most popular nightlife hotspots.

Built by the Wittelsbachs in 1891, this is the last of Munich's grand boulevards. It was designed as a typical avenue at the edge of the city and was originally only built-up on the southern side, with the English Gardens extending onto the street from the north. It was not, however, intended to be a unified architectural entity; the idea was that houses should alternate with green areas and the proximity of the River Isar would play its part in the overall aesthetic. The Prinzregentenbrücke (Prince Regent Bridge) was given to the city by Prince Regent Luitpold in 1891. There is a zigzag ascent to the Friedensengel the other side of the river. Further down Prinzregentenstraße are fine examples of what has come to be known as Prince Regent period architecture. The Prinzregententheater is also well worth a visit.

The all-you-can-eat American buffet special on Monday evenings (after 8p) is a killer!

This is something you wouldn't expect to see in a city! One warm days make your way to the Southern tip of the park to watch surfers manage the river Isar.
Description:
One of the oldest English-style landscape gardens and one of the largest municipal parks in Europe, the Englischer Garten (English Garden) is Munich's crowning glory. Although perhaps best known for its nudists, the park is popular with all types of people all year round. Other features include a Chinese pagoda with adjoining beer garden, the Monopteros Greek temple, a river and a boating lake. Visitors can also attend a traditional tea ceremony in the Japanese tea house.

Located southern Munich by the trade center, the Zeevat is a friendly international house owned by Jan and Fatima (Dutch and Brazilian). The rooms are large and furnished, which should help you feel comfortable in a home away from home.
Description:
The rooms are part of a friendly international family house (Dutch and Brazilian) in the Southeast of Munich, located next to the Trade Fair center and two large shopping malls. The historical city centre of Munich is approximately 30 min away with very convenient means of public transport. One of the rooms is a spacious one (40 sqm),located in the attic of the house, fully-furnished with a double bed, wardrobe, big sofa, fridge and a cable tv. The room is very cosy, comfortable and perfect for two people. There is however enough room for 3(1 extra bed available). Please have a look at our video in: .youtube/zeevatmunich The other room is furnished with a double bed and a wardrobe. It is smaller but very bright and welcoming. The bathroom with WC and bath is shared with the hosts. A washing machine is available for use in the cellar. Guests are welcome to use the comfortable living room which is equipped with a TV and the garden verandah. Free Internet access is available for guests' convenience. Please know that you have to ring at: Zeevat (since we don't have any signs in the house.) Description:
Schloss Schleißheim is a monument to the fantasies of an absolutist ruler and a passionate art collector. Built during the reign of Elector Max Emanuel, the splendid Baroque palace was intended as a royal residence, though the Elector himself was forced into exile and never lived here. Building work was begun in 1701 by Zuccalli and continued between 1719-26 by Joseph Effner the Younger. French architectural features are evident in the facade and the building's interior, which is a triumph of elegance. The most impressive rooms are the Große Saal, the Viktoriensaal and the Große Galerie.

If you've never been to India then you may imagine it a little like this place - too much of a good thing. The menu offers a terrific overview of the various types of regional Indian cuisine. The thalis, tandoori dishes and curries are particularly recommended, and the pleasant atmosphere adds to the enjoyment of your Indian adventure. Service is not always that fast and, on occasion, they don't clean up the mess from the previous customer properly, though on the whole, the staff are polite and pleasant.

The Hofbräu Keller is one of the local's favorite beer gardens and beer halls. It is actually larger than the Hofbräuhaus, but is a completely different atmosphere. Located in Haidhausen, just across the river from the old town, it's in a nice residential area where you may never run into another native English speaker. Don't worry though; they have English...

Tour guides are available. The acoustics in the main hall are outstanding. If you have the chance, sing a short tune!
Description:
Built in the 16th century by Duke Wilhelm V as a simple farmhouse, the Duke's son, Elector Maximilan I, converted the house into a high Renaissance-style manor house between in 1617-23. The original outhouses were kept, and remain intact today. Large scale renovation was necessary after a bad fire in 1944, and the Altes Schloss now forms part of the Bavarian National Museum, showing exhibitions on East and West Prussia and the Gertrud Weinhold collection.

Description:
What the name promises (or threatens), the Outland provides. The restaurant is fitted in the style of an outback bar, the decor is rustic and simple, and the walls are painted with symbols from the dreamland of all German drop-outs. The clientele is mixed and relaxed - how could it be otherwise in such a place? In the summer time, you can sit outside to eat. But the most remarkable thing is the menu; if you are curious and not afraid to experiment, you can choose the likes of shark steak or fillet of kangaroo.
