Welcome to Muscat/ It's a great place.

Guess you would be landing at MSQ port. Well, the old palace, old Muscat is about a ten minute taxi drive away. I would recommend spending some time at the Bait Al Zubair museum, has a fascinating collection of artifacts and traditional dresses from all over Oman. Try the Muttrah Souq, lovely wooden ceiling, smells of frankincense stalls.

The Grand Mosque is about 20 odd kms from the port. You can get a taxi from the port/ Corniche. Up down should maximum cost OMR 20. Just check with the tour guys on timings. Mosque is closed for non-Muslims on Fridays and during prayers.
