Description:
The Dorchester stands on the most venerable spot in Nanaimo: the site of the Hudson's Bay Company trading post in the 1850s, and then of the city's old opera house. Reminders of the opera-house days remain: The handsome chandeliers are all original, as are the ornate columns flanking the dining room. Guest rooms are comfortably furnished, though not exactly spacious. For the price, quality, and excellent downtown location, the Dorchester is hard to top, particularly after a C$1 million upgrade in 2007. Pay a bit extra for a bayside room -- the view is fantastic. Check the hotel website for seasonal Internet rates not available elsewhere. Rooms for those with disabilities are available.
