- Clos Du Val was one of the Napa wineries that participated in the now-legendary 1976 blind wine tasting that brought Napa Valley wines to international repute. Clos Du Val's first release Cabernet Sauvignon placed in the top five in that tasting, and the rest, as they say is history. Founded in 1972 by winemaker Bernard Portet, a descendant of Bordeaux wine merchants, Clos Du Val utilized French wine-making techniques that Portet learned when he was trained in that region. Clos Du Val's Cabernet was awarded first place in a rematch in 1986. Today, the expansive Clos Du Val winery includes a tasting room and a spacious shaded picnic area with plenty of room for families and big groups.
