• Connaught Place (referred to by locals as CP) is an excellent place to be located for a visit to Delhi. The area is built on a series of roads which run in concentric circles - much like a wheel. In the center of the wheel (hub) there is a huge underground bazaar selling all kinds of things. As in all bazaar-type settings, you should be very careful about the merchandise, pricing, bargaining, pickpockets, etc. It is safe to go there, however. If you look on a map of Delhi, you will see CP to the south two or three miles of the main train station. The roads which circle the area and the roads joining CP are loaded with banks of every description - you can have travelers' checks cashed or use an ATM. In this area there are all kinds of restaurants ranging from very budget to very expensive. A popular place like Starbucks in the U.S. is Barista at one third the price. You can trust the water they use in their coffee and have an excellent morning muffin with it. Also, they have wireless internet connections at some of their locations. In this area you will find very upscale night clubs with great views of the area. You can access the metro from two different stations in CP. There is a revolving restaurant right near Barakamba metro station in CP. The restaurant is very reasonably priced and is a fun thing to do - food is average. There are travel agencies and best of all an OFFICIAL office of the India Tourism Department. It is on Janpath and Connaught Lane. There they have inexpensive tours including half -day and full-day tours of the city. WARNING: Many places in CP and throughout India call themselves "official." This one described is OFFICIAL which is operated by the government of Delhi. Stay clear of all other so-called OFFICIAL tourist agencies. CP is located a short autorickshaw ride to Khan Market, an upscale shopping center or the Bengali Market which is an inexpensive small circle of restaurants, grocery stores, chemists, a shoe repair shop, cleaners, and flower shops. This is a bargain hunters paradise. In CP the street named Janpath is a wonderful huge market of Kashmiri shops and shops selling things from all over the world, but mostly they have products from India. Oh, and in this area you will find McDonald's; they have great McVeggie burgers. CP and very close to CP you will find all ranges of accommodations. There are guest houses to five-star hotels. Also, it is a pleasant place to stay as there are some very fine tree-lined avenues.
