Independence Day

Description:

  • August 15 is a date of significance in Indian history - it was on this day back in 1947 that the Indian sub-continent got its freedom from the British Empire. It is a national holiday, and is celebrated with great fanfare, especially in the capital city of New Delhi - the festivites involve an elaborate cermony at Red Fort, where the national flag is hoisted by the Prime Minister, and top politicians and public figures of the country, as well as thousands of spectators attend. Cultural programs are also hosted, not only in the city, but all over India.
