You can evaluate staying at Hotel Hans Plaza as its located on Barakhamba Road and near the underground metro station. Their website address is http://www.hanshotels.com/delhi/index.html. If you want cheaper price than the rack rate, you may get in touch with www.ubstravel.com (email: ps@ubstravel.com).

I am a resident of Delhi, so wouldn't know much about the hotels here :)
But, I did some research and found that Ajanta Hotel might just be the right choice for you as it is economical and near to Railway Station (perhaps not important) and some of the best historical places one can visit in Delhi (if you have at least one day for leisure). Also, they provide free airport pick-up service (per day - 1500 INR, approx 30 USD). visit http://www.ajantahotel.com/ or maybe makemytrip if looking for more options...

Hi...as I can understand that you need a budget accommodation and not a star hotel but it should be safe. There are two guest houses on the road connecting barakhamba and Janpath called the Janpath lane...they are good and safe too...I have stayed there myself and hence I know it. You may write to me for assistance if any in case you have not still booked any accommodation...Thanks and Cheers...Shantanu Roy

Having seen all the answers... I would suggest, you look for hotels within your budget. Therer are many hotels within walking distance from Barakhamba Road such as The Lalit - Hans Plaza - Janpath, Shangrila - Le Meridien and many more... Once you have decided what your budget is, we localytes can advise you better. YWCA and YMCA, between them have three hostels in the area as well...
