  • A trip to New Orleans is all about fun things to do. But you already know about Bourbon Street, so we've chosen a few places you might not be so familiar with. Harrah's Casino is so beautifully decorated that you might want to wander through the glittering rooms even if you don't like to gamble. The Fair Grounds Race Course, a 19th-century landmark, allows bettors to experience the thrill of live thoroughbred racing throughout the winter season (Thanksgiving to late March). One of many remarkable things about New Orleans is all the little pockets of the unexpected and Longue Vue House and Gardens is one of them. If you're in town in the spring, definitely check out the French Quarter Festival, a three-day festival held every April that's a celebration of French Quarter life and a less-crazy alternative to Mardi Gras. Whenever you're in New Orleans, make sure you take a detour from the tourist path and explore the many other fun things to do that the city has to offer.
