Description:
A standout even on a street full of mansions in a town full of pampering guesthouses, the Melrose Mansion has long combined luxury resort living with the best guesthouse offerings. Unfortunately, it seems somewhat resting on its laurels, needing some paint touch-ups and the like here and there. Service is still attentive and accommodating, and the breakfasts, once handsome feasts, aren't elaborate, though they do include delicious pastries from Croissant D'or, and the staff does try to address dietary needs. It still remains a charming old mansion, with well-maintained grounds, but it may no longer be justifying its high cost. (For which, please note, it has a very strict cancellation policy; half the reservation is paid upfront when you make your reservation and is not refundable. The other half is paid 30 days prior to your stay and, at that point, is also nonrefundable. On the other hand, they will apply any nonrefunded monies toward a future stay of up to a year later.)
The rooms vary from classic Victorian antiques to lighter country-style decor; we love the bright-yellow Miss Kitty's Room (named for a former tenant and burlesque dancer) and the more classic Burgundy Room. Bathrooms can be small, but fancy linens help. The Parc Henry suite overlooks the year-round heated pool and, between that and its large dining room and kitchen, seems perfect for entertaining and hanging out.
