Description:
Rampart Street needs more places like this: a sweet neighborhood cafe that aspires to serve more than just the usual New Orleans inexpensive fare. Frozen food is rarely used, and all the dressings are made fresh, a touch you appreciate when you try the tart Roquefort onion dressing. The signature starter is ginger crawfish dumplings in a sesame dipping sauce. Entrees include lamb shanks braised for 3 hours, until the meat is falling off the bone; the result is a nongreasy wonder. The salad with poached egg is worth coming back for alone. Coconut shrimp in a red curry sauce is very spicy with just a touch of sweet. Looking for something a little more familiar? Their hamburger is one of the best in the city, topped with goat cheese or Roquefort and bacon, and can be cooked perfectly rare; paired with crispy fries, it's a filling meal for $10. The apple tartin is like no other apple dish in New Orleans. They've even added small plates -- half orders of some of their most popular dishes.
