Bernard Passman carved his first work of art from a World War II ration crate as he awaited departure from the Philippines at the end of the war. He opened his first gallery in 1974 on Grand Cayman Island. Since then he has moved on from ration crates to black coral harvested from the western Caribbean Sea, from which he carves sculpture, original designs and jewelry. The jewelry is made even more exquisite by the addition of diamonds and gold. Passman's many commissions include a memorable request from the Grand Cayman government for an official wedding gift for the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diane for which he crafted a 97-piece cutlery set with service for eight, including serving utensils. Although he has galleries in Las Vegas, St. Thomas, Ketchikan, Alaska and the Caymans, he is at home here, where he designs and sculpts on a daily basis. - © wcities.com 2012
